First Resonator

Finally got around to building resonator guitar. No electronics at the moment since I built it for myself, & I never plug in. 21” scale because I find it easier fingering whole chords. Tabak box painted flat black. Used 5/16” lag screws for the strap buttons, which work really well. Handmade biscuit bridge with a jumbo fret. I love it! I can’t wait to build to build with the new thinner cone!! Going to use that one to make a Chicago tenor with a longer scale length.

Question about Biscuit and Lightening cone

I just ordered 2 biscuits, one for my lightening resonator cone. Do I attach the biscuit to the cone with a screw? (Converting cheap baritone uke to resonator uke.)

Bracing/Reinforcement for steel strings

I was curious how much bracing is necessary for steel strings on a 6-string with a bolt on style of neck.

Well, it depends on if you are bracing for structural support or for tone. When it comes to support I tend to use bracing sparingly. Too much and the box just goes dead and won't resonate. However, if you are wanting to brace purely for shaping the guitars tone, which most cigar box guitar builders completely fail to do, then I suggest you start by checking out this video: http://theartoflutherie.com/shaping-guitar-tone-with-brace-profiles-luthier-quick-tips/

There are tons of other tutorials on the web that you can search for and I would also suggest that you google the bracing patterns for most popular name brand guitars. That should give you a few ideas on how to apply this technique to your cigar box lids.

I'm a big proponent for both bracing as well as sound posts for cigar box instruments. I encourage everyone to experiment with both. I think you'll be very pleased with the difference they make.

Pet Bowl or Resonator cone for bass

Question:

Hello Charles, I'm planning on converting an Applause acoustic bass guitar to a resonator instrument to get more volume out of it. Possible cones are your 7" Thunder cone, a 7" (m.o.l.) stainless steel dog dish, or a 9" (m.o.l.) dog dish. I was wondering which you'd recommend. Would your Thunder cone stand up to the downward pressure of bass guitar strings?

Thanks for your advice on this.

Neck through or not?

I only build ”neck through” style guitars about 20% of the time. The rest of the time I build a type of bolt on style of neck. If you have read my overview of how i build redonator guitars then you will see what I mean. This bolt on style allows the guitar to fully resonate and provide a nice hollowbody tone. Here is a video of Justin Johnson playing one of my four string guitars. This guitar does not even have a seperate fretboard. It is just one solid piece of wood that I fretted.

What is your favorite style of neck?
