Build an old school, traditional, cigar box instrument

Rules:

Rule 1: Start a new project (don't enter something you've already built and had lying around!)
Rule 2: "Relic contest" Relic should bring to mind ideas of primitive, handmade, aged, distressed, OLD.

First Place: Jason Rosentreter Tenor Ukulele
Second Place: Michael Ballerini 4 string guitar

There truly were many great entries this year but these two were my favorites.

Jason submitted a 6 string as well as a Uke and they were both similar in style with wooden peg tuners and copper wire frets and distressed wood. Something about the smaller Uke just seemed more authentic to me and the necks on both of them were just exceptional.

Michael's guitar also had wooden tuners and I really liked the old flat head screws he used for fret position markers. That along with the many vintage, repurposed materials he used definitely made it a stand out entry as well.

2015 1st Annual Relic Instrument Contest

This 2015 contest didn’t have many rules. I simply asked for folks to “put down the power tools and the electric guitar parts and build an old school, traditional, cigar box instrument”
In the end I was looking for an instrument that looked like it could easily have been an early 20th century, barn-find type instrument.

I hoped this would be a contest where my asking participants to create something ostensibly simple would actually become an unexpected challenge. Make no mistake, every instrument submitted was amazing. There was not one bad build in the bunch. With that being said the winners of The 2015 Relic Instrument Contest are:
